How to avoid wasting skin care products
Whether you can afford to spend tens, hundreds, or even (gasp!) thousands of dollars on your must-have skincare and beauty products, you certainly don’t want to waste any of them. That’s why it’s important to know how much of your skin care products you need in order for them to be effective – and without them going to waste.
How much cleanser should I use?
A dime-sized amount is what is recommended for any cleanser you’re using, whether it’s a cream or a gel. For a foaming cleanser, this would mean approximately one pump. There is no benefit to using too much cleanser – and in some cases (such as with a cleanser formulated to acne-prone skin) excess cleanser can dry out your skin. Of course, using too little cleanser can mean that you’re leaving dirt, oils, and makeup behind. A dime-sized amount is just right.
How much facial scrub should I use?
You’ll want a bit more scrub for your face and neck – closer to a nickel-sized amount – to make sure you have enough. There’s really no harm in using a bit more, as long as you’re not too aggressive with the scrub. But again, using too little may mean you’re not getting the full effectiveness of the scrub.
How much serum should I use?
A pea-sized amount of serum is plenty to cover your face and neck. Use too much serum, and it may not absorb properly, and in some cases can lead to irritation (from the active ingredients sitting on your skin.) Using too little means you are not getting the full benefits of the product.
How much eye cream should I use?
A pea-sized amount is enough for both eyes. It’s important to use enough to keep the delicate eye area moisturized and protected, but too much can be irritating, or clog pores. In addition, excess eye cream is more likely to run into the eyes, and it can make it difficult to apply makeup.
How much moisturizer should I use?
If you’re using the proper moisturizer for your skin type and skin concerns, a nickel-sized amount is appropriate. This amount should cover your face and neck area. Too much can clog pores and lead to irritation and blemishes, but too little (or skipping it altogether!) can cause skin to look and feel dry and tight.
How much sunscreen should I use?
This is probably the most important. When applying sunscreen to your face, you need an amount the size of a large grape to insure proper coverage. And when applying sunscreen to your body, you need enough to fill a shot glass (an excuse to buy the vacation novelty shot glass if I’ve ever heard one!)
Sunscreen is one of those rare items where there really isn’t such a thing as “too much.” However, using too little can cause permanent skin damage. So, in case you haven’t heard it enough – DON’T SKIMP ON THE SUNSCREEN!
Read your skin care product directions
While we’ve provided great guidelines, it’s always a good idea to check the directions on any product you buy. There may be specific indications based on specific ingredients and formulations that you need to know.
And if the directions on the package seem unusual or they raise concerns, never hesitate to contact the company for clarification.
